The iLinc system seems simple to use with an intuitive interface – the program is designed to make it easier to host and attend online meetings and conferences. Features including integration with Salesforce.com, a clean interface and a range of participation tools help give this service an efficient edge.
With a lot of competition in the online conferencing market, how does the iLinc service compare against the others? We looked at conferencing and presenter features, video and audio quality and customer service to see how iLinc scored.
The iLinc for Meetings plan is specifically for online conference calls, sales demonstrations, product display and team building. iLinc also has a number of other packages available including iLinc for Learning, iLinc for Webinars, and iLinc for Support. The iMeeting package is for a set number of meeting attendees (15 at the time of writing) and a monthly fee (unlimited meetings.) You can have more people at your meetings for a different price structure. If you want to find out exactly what kind of service iLinc is, sign up for the 15-day free trial available on the website.
The iLinc service is reasonably stocked with features to allow meeting attendees to work together at a distance. You can share documents or media with other attendees, or your entire desktop. Joining a conference is easy – get in on your Mac or PC through the firewall-friendly joining system. The interactive whiteboard feature is for collectively marking up documents with highlighters and text mark-up tools. Additional tools included in the conferencing package include notification when someone “raises their hand” to speak, polling features and private chat. There’s also a good feature included in the package of the ability to create profiles to show on the screen when the conference is in progress so people are introduced to members of the team and their contact information. One thing lacking from iLinc is a mobile application for accessing meetings from a mobile device – this feature would be useful for companies with a dispersed workforce.
Organisation and coordination starts before the meeting even begins with a range of presenter features from iLinc. Load the content of your meeting in files and applications before your conference (you can also load documents while the meeting is in progress.) Invite participants though Microsoft Outlook, which also provides the scheduling organisation. There is also the opportunity to launch meetings via the Saleforce.com program. During the meeting itself you get to monitor the levels of participation with the Participation Meter. If the meeting seems to be flagging you can ask for hand raises or instant feedback. There is a polling feature for instant surveys and participant polls. Choose whether you display your whole desktop or selected files and applications. We like the recording feature which takes the hassle out of remembering what has been said, or taking notes as the meeting goes on. We also like the additional Green Meter feature. While not exactly essential, this tool is useful for demonstrating ROI as it tracks the cost savings and the lessened environmental impact of hosting meetings online.
Video & audio
iLinc has an integrated VoIP system for talking over internet audio but there is no linked-in video included, although you can set up your own video streaming via webcam so you can see who you are talking to. There are options for being able to call in on a phone line for people who don’t have a computer. The video and audio capabilities are good enough but the lack of a linked mobile app brings the service down in terms of convenience.
The iLinc system is firewall-friendly without additional add-ons needed. Industry-standard security protocols are in place for your meeting to remain safe and secure. For the hosted iMeeting plan SSL encryption is in place to protect the privacy of your commutations. Higher-priced plans can include upgraded 256-bit AES encryption.
Ease of use
The iLinc interface and dashboard is simple, clean and intuitive and we didn’t have any problems knowing what to do in order to attend a meeting, set one up or manage one. The layout is well organised and you can also customize certain aspects. There aren’t too many features which makes it easier to use but not as complete as other web conferencing applications.
Help & support
As with many other web conferencing providers, the iLinc website has a good selection of articles and PDFs on the KnowledgeBase and also FAQs for quick answers. If you’re having problems with the service you can submit a ticket, or call during office hours in the week. There’s also a training centre which provides classes and instruction on specific parts of the iLinc system.
The iLinc package is a user-friendly and well organised system for setting up and managing online meetings and web conferences. The application includes a good number of participation and communication features and decent customer support options. Try the service for free for 15 days.
