IamBigBrother is a useful parental control tool for basic monitoring purposes. It is fairly straight forward to use and is equipped with a few essential features that allow you to monitor your child’s online activities.
The installation process is quick and easy. The prompts are easy to follow and the software is fully setup in the matter of a few minutes. The software is paid for annually and comes with one licence. To install it on more than one computer additional licences will need to be purchased.
Filtering & Blocking
Websites: IamBigBrother does not include any filtering or blocking features for restricting access to particular websites. However, it records all the websites visited and the parent can view a full list of websites visited on certain dates.
IM & chat: The software cannot restrict access to instant messaging services, but it does record both sides of the conversations from major IM services, such as: MSN, Yahoo and ICQ.
Social network: Major social media sites such as Facebook and Twitter can be monitored for restricted keywords or inappropriate content.
Games: Online games accessed via a website are recorded and can be viewed in the activity reports.
Other: The keylogger records all keystrokes entered. Also, all email conversations can be monitored.
The software effectively monitors and records all websites visited, chat conversations, passwords and all keystrokes entered by the user. It is difficult for the child to avoid getting their online activities recorded, but it is certainly not impossible as the software can be easily disabled by an anti-malware tool. Further, the software struggles to record websites visited through proxy servers.
There is no time control features for this product.
The administrator has full control over all the settings and features of the software. An administrator’s password is required to make any changes to the software or to view the activity reports. You can choose to disable the software while you browse the internet so your information is not recorded by the program.
An additional service can be purchased to remotely monitor your child’s online activities, but it is quite expensive for a tool that is a standard feature in other parental control software.
IamBigBrother provides an adequate level of activity reports that provide the parent with a full list of all the websites visited, keystrokes entered and full chat conversations. It is the parent’s responsibility to login and view the reports, but you can choose to receive alerts via email if restricted keywords are used.
Remote management tools are available as an additional service and allow you to view reports from any device with an internet connection.
Ease of use
The user interface is fairly simple to navigate as the settings are neatly organised in easy to see icons. However, some of its functions can be a bit confusing to configure and the interface can be a bit tricky to navigate at first. Further, the collected data is poorly organised into a single category, which makes it incredibly difficult to locate specific information. In saying that, once you familiarise yourself with the user interface the software is fairly easy to use.
Help & support
A limited amount of support options are available. Customers can access a database of frequently asked questions for solutions to common issues. The only way to contact the support team directly is via email, which can often take a long time before a response is received. Customers would definitely benefit from a more efficient method of contacting support, such as phone support or live chat.
