• Huge number of subscribed members
• Serious daters use the site due to subscription fees
• Many up to date success stories from site users
• A lot of features are only available to subscribers (communication etc)
• More geared towards serious, long-term dating
A high-quality dating site which benefits from a huge number of subscribed members, and is one of the friendliest environments for online dating.
Dating Direct is an established dating site owned by the Meetic network, who also now own Match.com. As a result, both sites share many similarities, and they benefit from the branding and marketing that have made them two of best-known dating sites out there. As most of the features are only available to subscribed members, we took a look to see if the subscription fees lead to a better quality experience.
After choosing your username/password and entering some basic details, you must complete a multiple choice personality survey. This consists of some standard questions concerning appearance, how you would describe yourself etc. and a few more searching questions regarding income and religion. However, Dating Direct offers the choice to skip the questions you don’t think are relevant, which is a positive as being forced to answer these questions can be off-putting to some users. There is also a very short survey regarding the type of person you are looking for, which is used to filter potential matches for you. There is a validation email used to verify your email account is genuine, and then you are set to go.
Dating Direct uses your location and sign-up info to find a number of suitable profiles in your area, but this info can be altered easily by changing the search area or criteria.
The website offers a good advance search facility where you can filter potential matches using a number of different parameters, such as physical traits, personality traits and distance from your area etc. You can also search for people born on the same day as you, or for users whose birthday it is on the day you are online.
There is also the option to browse through online members, but this can be an arduous process, for example when we were online there was over 28,000 other members online at the same time, so you are much more likely to find a potential match using the search functions.
Communication is limited unless you are a subscribed member on Dating Direct, as both emails and Instant Messages require a subscription fee to use. For subscribers, you can send a wink or email to other users to let them know you are interested in them, or you can use the live chat to start a conversation with people online. You can also see which users have added you to their favourites list.
As the majority of members will be subscribers, people tend to take dating more seriously than on other sites. A result of this is we found people to be polite and friendly, making for a pleasant experience online.
Profiles are checked for inappropriate content and the website is well moderated, and as a result there are very few fake profiles and scammers that you might find on some of the free sites. The guide to safe online dating isn’t as comprehensive as on some of the other sites we have used. All information is encrypted to a high level, so you can be confident about your personal details remaining secure on the site.
Ease of use
Dating Direct is very easy to navigate and use, with a simple interface that is straightforward and nicely designed, although it could be slightly more refined as there is a bit of advertising cluttering up the homepage (though this is mainly for Dating Direct Affinity).
Help & support
There is a decent email support system that seems fairly responsive, as well a frequently asked questions section that isn’t quite as comprehensive as on some of the other dating websites we have looked at.
Dating Direct, like its partner site Match.com, benefits from being one of the best-known dating sites available, and as a result has a large membership base. Due to subscription fees, the majority of users are serious about dating and there aren’t as many timewasters as you will find on the free sites. However, without a subscription this isn’t worthwhile as the majority of basic features are only available to paid-up members, but for those users who are happy to pay to join a dating site, you won’t go far wrong with Dating Direct.
