Google Reader to be shut down today

1 July 2013 | Category: Online

Once the most popular RSS reader on the web, the service is being closed for the final time today.

Google announced back in March that the RSS service which was launched seven years ago would be closed. Although the service is believed to still be popular amongst it's users, it's usage is in decline. The number of websites creating RSS feeds has also steadily been declining on the internet.

Many analysts believe the popularity of the smartphone has fundamentally changed in the way people consume news. People tend to consume news regularly and in small consumption.

Google Reader joins Google Wave, Talk and Hangouts in it's line of dis-continued products and services. Yahoo is also closing it's RSS Alerts tool today.
