Financial institutions trying to disable dangerous botnets

29 March 2012 | Category: Online

Zeus botnet variants responsible for millions of dollars of online fraud, are being tackled by Microsoft after financial institutions raised concerns about the levels of online banking fraud caused by the botnets.

Botnet variants are often sold to criminal gangs to collect sensitive data such as usernames, passwords and credit / debit card details using a technique called keylogging, which records the keys pressed on a victims computer.

However, security experts Sophos have said that they have not seen any evidence that Microsoft are succeeding in their battle. The complex nature of botnets, means that it will be difficult for them to dramatically reduce the number of botnets circulating.

It is estimated that over 15 million computers have been infected with Zeus botnet or variants at some point.
