Facebook reaches 500 million users

23 July 2010 | Category: Online

Facebook announced today that they have now reached 500 million users worldwide. It's estimated that on average 700,000 users join the website every day.

The social networking website has seen massive growth since its launch in 2004. Facebook is now so large, that if it were a country, it would now be the 3rd biggest country in the world, behind only China and India.

It's good news for Facebook after the recent controversy of its privacy policy and child protection policies. On his blog, Facebook founder Mark Zuckerberg wrote "I could have never imagined all of the ways people would use Facebook when we were getting started 6 years ago." The website was started while Zuckerberg was a student at Harvard when he was trying to find a way for members of the University to share photos and messages.

Facebook is now aiming to double its membership to one billion users. Facebook believe this growth will come from India and Brazil where the website is currently underperforming.
