F-Secure Anti-Virus for Mac
• Accurately detects Mac malware
• Firewall protection
• Simple to use
• No Windows malware protection
• Can’t run a quick scan
F-Secure Anti-Virus for Mac is one of the simplest anti-virus packages around but it still provides a decent amount of features including firewall protection. It’s not the most comprehensive system in the world but serves you well if you want robust Mac virus protection.
F-Secure, founded in 1988 in Helsinki, Finland, doesn’t have as recognizable a name as the leaders of the anti-virus pack but it does boast tens of thousands of users around the world. The company is on a mission to “fight for digital freedom” and the ability to live a digital life without fear. The company provides both Windows and Mac protection. How does it stack up against the competition?
The protection provided by the F-Secure anti-virus package is enough to stop viruses, spyware, worms, and other forms of malware making their way to your Mac. The web protection feature has a set of traffic lights alerting you to suspect search engine links. Unfortunately for your Mac, the software doesn’t track down rootkits and there is no added anti-phishing protection.
In the independent lab tests F-Secure Anti-Virus for Mac had a mixed result. For AV Comparatives the software caught all Mac malware samples but missed most of the Windows malware samples – not great news when you’re trying not to infect colleagues and friends who are Windows users. There’s been no recent AV Test research carried out. When we used the software the system continued to work well, and we didn’t experience too much of a slowdown but this is by no means the lightest software in terms of performance impact.
Scans & updates
The full scan is easy to run from the control panel and it looks in-depth into your computer to see what problems, if any, are affecting the machine. The other option you have is to specify which folders or locations you want to scan. Real-time scanning looks at every file you access to make sure no new malware is causing problems. We couldn’t find a way to schedule a scan, and there seems to be no quick way of carrying out a quick scan. This isn’t ideal when you just want to make sure the system is safe with the minimum of fuss.
As contrasted with other products, F-Secure scores points because it has a firewall feature where others don’t. The program automatically turns on your firewall and alerts you if it is switched off. You can scan removable devices with this software but there are no other useful features to comment on.
Ease of use
One of the points in the favor of F-Secure is its simplicity. Practically anyone can set up the software in a few minutes and navigating the system is easy. The large icon on the control panel tells you if everything is OK – a check on a green background – whether it needs more information – an “i” icon on blue – or an exclamation mark on a yellow background and a cross on red when something has been found. First-time users will find the system extremely simple to pick up.
Help & support
F-Secure offers an excellent choice of customer support options, from chat support to submitting a support request by email, to a telephone helpline. There's also a comprehensive knowledge base and a community forum. Telephone lines are not open all the time, however, and it's not free to call. The forum was pretty active when we checked.
The F-Secure Anti-Virus for Mac program is simple to use, easy to navigate, and fast to install. By offering you good protection against Mac malware you benefit from a safer Mac. A lack of added features and customizable options marks it down, but F-Secure is still a good option if you want a no-frills anti-virus package.
