Our verdict

If you’re looking for grammar and sentence structure and a more traditional language-learning approach, don’t try this program. If you are open to a new way of learning and retaining Spanish words, give Rosetta Stone a try.

Full review

Rosetta stone recreates the conditions that help you to learn your first language. This means no translations from one language to another, and no complex explanations of grammar or sentence structure. In this way you learn basic conversational skills, greetings, introductions, and questions and answers.

Does Rosetta Stone succeed in its teaching aims? We checked out the program to take a look at its features.

Setup is simple – you need to purchase the software and run it on a compatible computer with Internet access. The program starts with a brief introduction but then you’re straight into the lessons. Because this is Level 1, there are no tests to assess your level; everyone starts in the same place.

You can also purchase the course in Latin American Spanish.

Rosetta Stone’s Level 1 software will help you build the basics of vocabulary, learn the language basics, speak Spanish without a prompt and read and write basic Spanish. Topics in the Level 1 package include family, age, introductions and greetings, buying and selling and times of day.

The process of learning is through picture-matching and repetition of phrases, which gradually build in complexity as you memorize the vocabulary and sentence structure. For example, you may not know the Spanish word perro but you will recognize it when you see the picture of the dog positioned next to it.

There is also variety in the language-learning experience, including a writing tool for you to spell out the word relating to the picture. When you make a mistake the software highlights the letter that is wrong and gives you the opportunity to alter it.

There aren’t many language or grammar tools included in the Rosetta Stone package as the program concentrates on retaining Spanish words without translation. However, when you work through the program you find you don’t actually need any extra grammar or word help.

Advanced features

You can use the Rosetta Stone program in a variety of different modes, from delay mode to timer mode, which gives you a limited time in which to select the correct answer. At the end of every lesson you are given the opportunity to simulate a real-life conversation.

Rosetta Stone leads live online lessons that are taught by native Spanish-speakers and you have access to an online community to chat with other learners and play games.

Interactive tools

Speech recognition is a good addition to the language-learning package and with Rosetta Stone you can practice repeating words and phrases until you feel confident and are pronouncing them correctly. The program concentrates on the fundamental sounds in Spanish which you can use to pronounce a number of different words correctly. The software package comes with a headset with microphone so you can use Rosetta Stone’s speech recognition tools.

The software comes with an app for your iPhone or iPod Touch, for learning on the go, and you can also use the program on your MP3 or CD player to maximize your learning opportunities.

The software includes interactive games in Spanish that you can play against other learners or yourself.

Progress tracking

The software includes comprehensive tools for tracking your progress and seeing which areas need more practice. When you are completing the course in Test mode, the software keeps track of how many answers you get correct and your statistics are displayed at the end of the session.

The Adaptive Recall activity is designed to test your memory and how well you have picked up the language taught in the session.

Rosetta Stone is a very well known and respected language-learning company and millions of people have tried the Rosetta Stone method. There are many satisfied customers too, so you can be sure you are getting a professional, good value product.

The immersive nature of the language-learning is said to be very effective. With Rosetta Stone you use the interactive programs then practice what you have learnt in the online tutored sessions or in the language-learning community. In this way you begin to think in Spanish from the very beginning and build accurate sentences step-by-step.

Ease of use

The interface is so simple you may think there is something missing. The Rosetta Stone interface and process is one of the simplest out there and all the features it has are essential and easy to use. There are few instructions and a couple of times we were a little confused as to how to provide the answer to a question, but on the whole the program is highly intuitive and well designed.

Rosetta Stone, with its pictures and interactive activities, is fun to use. The process of picture-matching is intuitive and enjoyable and you may not even realize you’re actually learning – it’s certainly more fun than memorizing vocabulary lists, anyway.

Help & support

Read through the list of FAQs or consult the user manual if you have questions. There are also tutorials that help you if you’re unsure of any aspect of the process. Alternatively, you can get technical support over the phone or by email.

The process of language-learning may be a little different but it has paid off for thousands of people who successfully learn with Rosetta Stone. This software is simple, fun and effective.

Rosetta Stone Spanish Totale Level 1 doesn’t have a free demo but there is a six-month money back guarantee when you buy the product.
