Digital SLR cameras explained

Grab your bag – you’ll need it for your digital SLR camera. With the camera itself, an extra lens, plus a separate flash, spare batteries and memory cards, you can’t just slip a digital SLR in your pocket.

But then what did you expect? Digital SLR cameras are what the professionals use. If you want to snap at super high resolutions, through the best lenses, with the most reliable equipment, you’re going to have to put up with a camera that takes up a bit of extra room.

Digital SLR cameras are all about putting you in control. Although most have some automatic modes, these cameras only perform at their best when you fully take the controls. You have to be willing to learn and experiment. And assuming you are, you’ll take far better photos than you’d ever manage with a compact camera.

Flexibility and control

Digital SLR cameras are versatile. Not only can you change the settings when you take a photo, but you can also switch lenses and connect an array of extra equipment, like external flashguns and remote controls. In short, the number of ways you can use a digital SLR camera dwarfs other types of camera.

They’re also usually designed with screens that show more realistic colors, and have a viewfinder to help you frame shots accurately. However, with so many settings, the controls can seem overwhelming – so if you’re new to digital SLRs, it’s a good idea to choose a camera that lets you automate some settings while you play with others – at least to start with.

Having said that, don’t let the steep learning curve put you off. Digital SLR cameras are fun to use, and let you explore your photographic abilities more than any other type of camera.
