SEO tips

Our top SEO tips to help get your website noticed.

You've just launched your website and your keen to attract new visitors. One of the most important and cheapest sources of traffic to your website are search engines such as Google, Bing & Yahoo. The process of Search Engine Optimization (SEO) helps to increase the volume and traffic from the search engines to your website.

Please note: Google is referred in most of the examples below, but most of the points below can also be applied to Bing, Yahoo and other major search engines.

1. Add fresh content regularly

Google will give your website extra boost in the rankings if it can see that your website is updated regularly, because it knows your website is current. If you discuss related current topics on your website, your also likely to receive a ranking boost. This is one of the key reasons that people have blogs and why they rank so highly.

2. Don't become obsessed with keyword insertion

There is a SEO myth that the more times a keyword appears on a web-page, the higher it is likely to rank in the search engines. This simply isn't true. Google does look for keywords, but its frequency is not important. Some websites have been heavily penalized for "keyword stuffing".

3. Don't purchase links

If your caught purchasing links then you could find your website removed from the search engines. Purchasing links is very different to pay-per-click advertising. Purchasing links is seen as an deliberate attempt to improve your ranking, where as pay-per-click is seen as advertising. You can avoid any confusion by adding "no follow" to you links.

4. Create a sitemap

Google's bots, like to be able to index your content quickly and without navigating various levels. By using a sitemap the bots can index all of your websites pages in one place. Therefore more of your web pages will appear within Google. Don't forget a site map is also great for website usability.

5. Quality links

One of the most important search engine ranking factors is the volume and quality of links to your website. The websites that appear at the top of Google, will more often than not have more quality links than those beneath them. The quality of the link is critical. Its much better to obtain one high quality link, than fifty poor links.

6. Quality content

Always aim to create content that is interesting and something that people will want to share. If they want to share it with others, then you'll get more traffic and also more links. Its the same principle as before - one high quality article, is better than fifty poor articles.

7. Avoid using JavaScript and Flash

Both technologies make it hard for the search engines bots to index your website. So if they can't see your content then its not going to get listed. Javascript is often used for website navigation. The bots are unable to crawl the navigational links and therefore can't index your content. Websites built entirely in flash are a big SEO no, no and you should seriously consider rebuilding your website in HTML

8. Avoid dymanic URLs

Search engines do not like dymanic URLs because they are neither human or search engine friendly. Instead use static URLs that are keyword rich and that help your website visitor to view and understand what the page is about.

9. SEO is all about quality links and content

SEO can get quite complex and although there are literally hundreds of factors that will effect your search engine ranking - SEO is all about the content of your website and the links to it. If you focus on these two factors you can't go wrong.

10. Meta data is really not that important

Meta data was originally designed to inform search engines about the content of a web page. However, it soon became misused. The top search engines don't even use the keyword tag anymore, so don't spend too much time entering keywords. A much better use of your time is optimizing your page titles. The title of web page has a significant impact on its ranking.
