An accounting software solution for Macs, Mamut AccountEdge is an entry-level desktop package with cloud add-on. Mamut AccountEdge offers the features you need to keep control of the financial health of your business, and it is good without being impressive, and it costs a lot more than its competitors for a Cloud and desktop-based solution. If you want accounting software specifically for Apple it’s a good option, otherwise it’s nothing special.
Mamut is headquartered in Norway with over 400,000 customers in 16 countries. When you purchase AccountEdge you buy a license for one product and you need an up to date Mac operating system. The AccountEdge Cloud, which allows you to complete accounting tasks remotely through your web browser, is an add-on that isn’t included with the desktop package. The price for cloud access ranges from $10 a month for one user, to $100 a month for up to 50 users.
Invoices & Billing
Using the Mamut AccountEdge software makes it easier to get your invoices properly formatted, sent out, and tracked. You can create your own customized invoices and adjust how the invoices appear, as well as see the status of invoices and payments on an easy to read screen. Invoices are directly emailed from the program. There doesn’t seem to be an easy way to send estimates and then convert them quickly to invoices, however, and there are no auto-payment invoice features.
On the other side of the business, enter all your purchases and record where you owe money, and when bills are due. You can use the purchasing tools and stock control features to see where your stock levels rest, and what you need to do to manage your inventory successfully.
Mamut AccountEdge has features for tracking commission and keeping to a set budget and through the mobile app you can enter expenses and purchases, and record money as you spend it. You can then track your business expenses and add them to invoices at a later date. We couldn’t see the facility for taking a snapshot of paper receipts, which is a quick way to be able to record expenses on the fly.
Use the mobile app to create "activity slips", which are basically hours worked at a job site or on a remote project, which are then billed to a particular job. This remote time tracking feature is a useful addition to previous versions of the software, which lacked these tools.
Mamut AccountEdge is pretty good when it comes to reports, and you can do a lot to analyze the financial aspects of your business that make a difference to your bottom line. For example, you can run reports that track and calculate VAT, track profitability and margin by invoice, create profit and loss reports, and put together balance sheets.
Overall, you can see seven years of transactions when using the program, which provides a solid overview of your financial status and how it compares to previous years. The OfficeLink tool is a clever and useful one – export financial data from AccountEdge to Excel for analysis or to Word for marketing and mail shots.
The Mamut AccountEdge Cloud is actually a subscription add-on to the desktop software, which makes this accounting solution somewhat different to most of the others in our list. Using the Cloud you can enter sales transactions, track time to various projects, and complete other business tasks. In addition there is a free mobile app for iPhone and iPad that works using Dropbox as a central store to manage documents and processes.
Sharing & Integration
Mamut AccountEdge is not as well-connected as the other accounting software solutions and lacks the add-ons that others provide, although there is Shopify ecommerce integration, and you integrate with Dropbox for secure backups. Also link with iCal for calendar integration and event reminders.
Ease of use
Use the Setup Assistant to configure the software at the very beginning. The flowchart interface is stripped down to the basics so it’s easy to operate. However the whole package is not ideal for non-accountants as you do need to have some rudimentary knowledge of accounting terms before you can begin to use the program. It's a double-entry accounting tool which makes it more accessible to accountants, but people with no financial background may struggle initially.
Help & support
In order to access help and support you need to pay the mandatory service agreement charge each year. When you do, you have access to free support and updates – support comes in the form of email or telephone assistance. A series of FAQs are posted in the website and there is an online help manual accessed from the website or from within the program itself.
Mamut AccountEdge is not the most attractively priced package and it is not as user-friendly or sophisticated in terms of design and function. But it does deliver double-entry accounting standards and there are enough features for small businesses to make the most of this accounting software.
